Welcome to my voice studio page!

My second passion in life is teaching voice. With my background in voice pedagogy, I specialize in musical theatre and classical voice. I have also worked with singers interested in jazz and alternative rock.

I truly believe that teaching singing is a separate art to the teacher's own performing. I have studied voice pedagogy extensively, and provide individualized training to every student. The goal of voice studies is to not only develop the voice, but also to give the student the necessary tools to recreate their best singing outside the voice studio. Singing is more than talent, it is a learned and developed skill! Through vocalises, strategically selected repertoire, and guided practice, we build together a singing and performance technique giving students the tools to grow and take ownership of their performance outside the studio.

In addition to developing the voice, students study audition strategies, performance and acting technique, and study a variety of vocal repertoire. Many alumni of my studio are now studying in bachelor of Musical Theatre and Voice Performance programs at universities such as Boston University, Montclair University, the Westminster Choir College, Rowan University, and James Madison University and Rider University. Alumni have also been accepted into BM in Music Education, BS in Music Therapy, and BS in Music Production degrees. Additionally, many singers from my studio receive leading roles in their high school/community musicals, perform leading roles in NJ regional theater summer programs, and receive awards in competitions from their local theaters and school districts.

To ensure the safety of all students, all voice lessons will occur online for the duration of the pandemic. I have offered online voice lessons since 2017, prior to the pandemic. This is a practice I have refined, enabling me to offer same quality lessons as in-person. I have observed the same studio outcomes between my online and (previously) in-person students. In addition to my private studio, for students residing in the south jersey area, I serve on the voice faculty of Rowan University (college-prep division). Several of my students are full scholarship recipients of the Glassboro Academy Program.

Family Testimonies

Belt, chest voice, head voice….I never realized all of these things were real until my daughter starting taking what I call real voice lessons with Christopher.  She has taken voice lessons in the past when she was younger but they were just singing a song to prepare for a recital.  Christopher works on technique.  He helps her understand not just how to sing a song but how the voice really works.  The anatomy and physiology behind it all.  My daughter started with Christopher when she was 14.  I knew she was ready for more than just practicing for a song but I did not realize how much more there is to learn.  I have seen such growth in my daughter’s voice in just a few short months.  He teaches her techniques and through that she has developed such a respect and appreciation for singing and the performing arts.  His teaching methods are infectious.  She leaves every lesson yearning to practice more for the next lesson.  We were crushed selfishly when Christopher told us he was leaving the states to study and perform in Europe however through the help of modern technology and Christopher she has been taking Skype lessons and keeps learning more and more.  It has been such a great experience for her as well as me:  I love listening to her practice.  The improvement and confidence she displays is priceless!  Thank you so much Christopher.  I do believe it was not an accident that we meet.  The timing was perfect!  Thank you for all you do.  (Sharon Shaw)

Christopher Hochstuhl has taught my 17 year old daughter Emma for 4 years. During that time, he expertly prepared her for numerous musical theater performances, culminating in Mrs. Potts! He built her vocal range and her confidence at the same time. Would highly recommend Chris! (Sue McMahon)
